Design for Place ·
Environmental installation transforming an underutilized public courtyard through typography, light, and spatial experience.
Overview
Design for Place explores how typography, atmosphere, and environmental structure can reshape public space. Inspired by the Danish concept of hygge, the project reimagines an overlooked urban courtyard as a welcoming communal environment centered on warmth, comfort, and reflection. Through illuminated typography, architectural repetition, and restrained material choices, the installation creates a spatial experience that encourages pause, interaction, and shared presence within the urban landscape.
Context
The project reimagines a narrow public courtyard framed by historic brick architecture. Although situated within an active downtown area, the space functioned primarily as a transitional walkway rather than a destination. Environmental graphics and spatial intervention were used to amplify the courtyard's architectural rhythm and transform its atmosphere.
Development
Early explorations tested how typography could inhabit the courtyard through walls, pathways, pillars, and suspended elements. Multiple iterations examined scale, placement, and visibility while exploring how language could function as both communication and environmental structure.
As the concept evolved, the design shifted from surface-applied graphics toward illuminated forms that define and activate the space itself. This transition established the foundation for the final installation.
Typography, color, and structure work together to create a cohesive environmental experience. Illuminated letterforms transform language into architectural form, while repeated framing elements establish rhythm and movement throughout the courtyard.
Systems + Materials
The final typographic system was selected for its softer, more organic character, complementing the natural materiality of the pergola structure. A muted palette inspired by local architecture and twilight conditions reinforces the courtyard's atmosphere, supporting a sense of comfort, welcome, and reflection.
Final Installation
The final installation transforms the courtyard into a welcoming public environment shaped by warmth, light, and spatial rhythm. Illuminated panels carrying the principles of hygge create a sequence of experiences that guide visitors through the space while encouraging reflection, gathering, and engagement.
Through the integration of typography, architecture, and light, the project demonstrates how environmental communication can strengthen a sense of place and redefine the experience of public space.
